Harvesting & Applying Rabbit Urine as an Organic Bio-Pesticide and Foliar Booster
In modern integrated commercial farming, nothing goes to waste. One of the most potent, high-value byproducts in sustainable agriculture today is raw and fermented rabbit urine. Valued for its rich nitrogen-phosphorus-potassium balance and powerful natural insecticidal properties, rabbit urine has emerged as an eco-friendly game-changer for horticultural and grain farmers across Nigeria.
1. Nutrient Composition of Rabbit Urine
Rabbit urine contains significantly higher nitrogen and potassium concentrations than cow or goat urine. Its natural biochemical composition includes:
- Nitrogen (N): Readily absorbable organic nitrogen for rapid leaf synthesis and vigorous plant vigor.
- Phosphorus (P) & Potassium (K): Promotes sturdy root development, enhanced flowering, and disease resistance.
- Uric Acid and Bio-Ammonia: Natural alkaline compounds that repel insect pests and disrupt pest egg oviposition on crops.
2. Setting Up an Automated Gutter Collection System
To collect pure, uncontaminated urine from rabbitries:
- Construct multi-tiered cages equipped with slanted PVC corrugated plastic or galvanized sheeting under each wire-mesh floor.
- Direct the runoff into a central PVC gutter fitted with a fine mesh filter to separate solid droppings and spilled feed from liquid urine.
- Channel the clean urine into dark HDPE storage containers for curing and fermentation.
3. The Anaerobic Fermentation Process
Raw rabbit urine should be aged and fermented for 21 to 30 days before field application. Fermenting in sealed drums with 2% molasses and crushed garlic/ginger enhances its microbial diversity and boosts insecticidal potency against stubborn crop pests like fall armyworms, whiteflies, aphids, and root-knot nematodes.
4. Proven Field Dilution & Application Rates
- Foliar Insecticide & Foliar Feed (1:5 ratio): Mix 1 litre of fermented rabbit urine with 5 litres of clean water. Spray leaves early in the morning (6:30 AM – 8:30 AM) every 7 to 10 days during vegetative growth.
- Soil Conditioning Root Drench (1:3 ratio): Mix 1 litre of fermented urine with 3 litres of water. Apply 250ml around the root zone of tomatoes, peppers, maize, and citrus trees twice monthly.
- Pest Infestation Knockdown (1:2 + Neem Extract): Add 50ml neem seed oil extract to 1 litre fermented urine in 2 litres water for aggressive pest control on severely infested plots.
